New Beta: Get Missed Calls, Messages, & Calendar Entries In One Homescreen Widget With Nokia Notifications

by Mike Macias on June 8, 2010

This is something I’ve been wanting for awhile on my Nokia N97. A less intrusive notification when a new call, sms, or voicemail comes through and I miss it. As you know right now we get a popup on the homescreen that blocks out part of our screen real estate. Most of the time I ignore missed calls until later so it is irritating to have to push “exit” to get rid of that notification and see the rest of my screen. Nokia Beta Labs just released a widget for us to test out that keeps all this information in one place on our homescreen without intruding or blocking other widgets. They are calling it Nokia Notifications.

Check out their description:

Today we are releasing a new beta for a short trial.  Nokia Notifications gathers missed calls, voicemails, messages, and missed calendar alarms and presents them in one list for you to manage at your convenienceAdding the widget to your homescreen removes the need to acknowledge individual notifications that may otherwise get in the way of doing other actions on your device.

Sounds cool, right? So far I’m loving it because it gives as much information as possible. If I have only 1 new SMS then it shows a clip of the text along with the contact image. If I have multiple notifications like missed calls, SMS, and voicemails, those are listed on the 3 available lines. If there are too many to list then you can tap the widget and get a popup showing all your notifications. Here you can also clear them out or filter by type. Very smart! Check out my screenshots:

    What theme are you using?
    and this weather widget? AccuWeather?

  • Dave

That's the iphone theme. My favourite theme for the N97. Anyone heard anything else about the new V3 firmware?

  • matias

I thought this beta would get rid of all the notifications(sms, missed calls, etc) that pop up on the homescreen and block out part of the screen.
    This is still happening though.

I stil have to touch “Cancel” to see my home screen.

Does the widget work like this?

    Thank you.

Hi. The theme I'm using is called Fissure by TehkSeven. It is a premium theme and normally has a dark background. The wallpaper is a custom image that I downloaded from wallpaperswide.net. The weather widget is a full weather solution called SPB Weather. The app is very detailed and the widget is beautiful. Works with any theme. Find it at the link below.

    Download Fissure:

I haven't heard anything about the new firmware. Good question!

Hi Matias. This is not happening for me. The missed call and sms notifications are gone. Try rebooting your phone. I didn't have to but maybe you should try that.

Fantastic article, Mike…glad to see something like this coming down the pipe from Nokia. I'm going to give it a shot, as I consistently 'skip' or check later my calendar notifications.

thanks for the heads up on the weather widget as well…AcuuWeather sucks big time for my location. We had an overcast day with lots of wind, and it showed it as 100 degrees and sunny! I couldn't believe it.

Great widget, I would not have found out about it with out the help of this website. I can now get a preview of my SMS before opening it on my homescreen (Yes it beats SMS Preview App).

Looks nice but the only notification it shows me are new sms (text mess.) No calendar, nu e-mail, nothing! Is there an option I missed?

By the way, with the latest firmware version it is a very stable device, all problems I had are solved…! Finally the N97 is perfect!

Hi..I'm new to the N97 and to your blog. Thanks for all the great info! Question – what is that weather app on your phone? I have Accuweather but it only shows 1 day on the widget.

  • Wolfy

it only shows incoming calls and texts. It may be useful for people who get a lot of calls. For myself, I find Nokia Beta Lab's Photo Browser much more useful…more fun than the iPhone photos!
