N97 Freeware: Symtorrent Is Like Bit Torrent For Your Smartphone

by Matt Towsey on September 19, 2009

I came across a useful app whilst trawling the internet over the weekend looking for something interesting to post on N97 fanatics. I sometimes use bit torrent applications on my pc. I use sites like Mininova and btjunkie to find what I’m looking for.

It was actually late Friday that I came across an app that would let me do this on my mobile. This I thought was quite impressive and thought I’d give it a try. I downloaded the app from Symbian Freak. There is a version for both S60 3rd edition and 5th edition. It works exactly like it does on a PC.

You search for your file using a programme like Mininova as mentioned previously and, then hit the download button and the Symtorrent application automatically starts up on your phone. Next you need to select the downloaded torrent file and choose options and hit start download.

Now I’ve tried this with a WLAN network and it worked fine (this would be my suggested method of download due to data charges that may apply) although this will also work over a 3G network.

Next you’ll need to hit the arrow next to the file button to get to the status screen as pictured below. From here you’ll be able to start the download. When you instruct the programme to start it will ask what connection it should use. Choose wisely or you could end up with data charges even if you have a unlimited download contract as these are often subject to a fair usage policy. The programme will then search for a connection and then start to locate peers. Once the programme has located the peers the download will begin.

Once the download is complete you can close the application down. The file should have been stored to the E:/Bitorrent file it created on installation but this can be changed to another location within the software settings of the app. I’m not encouraging anyone to illegally download any material but it is a great little app.

Not familiar on using torrents but would like to try, wonder if anyone has managed to get Accuweather on their N97. I am working in China and cannot get it, would this work for me?? Thank you

Checked & double checked links for Symbian S60 5th edition version of SymTorrent but .sis file within downloaded rar folder file always says 3rd edition.

It does seem to run ok however after multiple warnings of incompatibility during install. Just downloaded small torrent from MiniNova site using Opera mini 5 beta (highly recommended). After clicking on torrent download, default browser loaded as well & then SymTorrent in very quick succession. Guess I should use default browser directly in future.

    Many thanks for the tip.

It seems there is only one current version 1.41 compatible with 3rd & 5th edition.

Multiple warnings during installation are to be expected as the self signed application installs several dll's.

This works great, and i'm glad i'm on vodafone's network as they are upgrading their whole HSDPA network to the new 14.4mb standard, looking forward to some great download speeds!

This software works great. Only gripe is after using it to download a short TV episode, and watching it, I had 0 battery leftover to use my phone for the rest of the day :( .

I use this program all the time to get music direct to my N97. Im thinking of starting an upload of movies that can download direct to your N97 via this program. Does anyone have any requests? Ill post a link to the downloads if anyone requests something!
